Food Security Courses, Workshops, and Events
The Capital Region Food and Agriculture Initiative Roundtable (CR-FAIR) offers a list of organizations that offer food security courses and workshops and also maintains an updated calendar of food-related events, workshops, farmers’ markets, etc.
Cowichan Valley’s O.U.R. Ecovillage’s “Grow Island Grow 2010 Program” is for participants who wish to learn the art of Sustainable Food Production in relation to organic practices, biodynamics, edible landscaping, bio-intensive, and Permaculture with a foundational focus on starting a small business/income production. This unique program offers a range of new growers the opportunity to have a base camp/learning community at O.U.R. Ecovillage but also to work with a wide variety of different farmers/producers/growers throughout the Cowichan Valley. This program is about empowering a new generation of farmers to understand the rigors of farming and challenges of generating income.
Foxglove Farm, Salt Spring Island has announced the 2010 season of the Centre for Arts, Ecology & Agriculture. They will offer workshops focusing on sustainable agriculture and the culinary arts. Their programs include one to five day retreats and workshops bringing well-known writers, artists, musicians, foresters, farmers, and ecologists to share their knowledge within the context of a working landscape. They also offer a summer “farm camp” for children, guided tours, school programs, culinary events, and an annual open house with tours, music and food.
