Denman Island Farm Plan

The Denman Island Farm Plan is a project of the Denman Island Local Trust Committee. It began in 2009 with the appointment of a Steering Committee of islanders, one local trustee, the Comox Valley Regional District electoral area director, and with support staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands and the Islands Trust.

The Steering Committee's vision for farming on Denman Island is:

"An Island where we feed each other abundantly because farming is a viable and valued foundation of our sustainable community"

The project was divided into two phases. Phase 1 was the Agriculture Strategy  which was completed in January, 2011 and was funded by the Islands Trust and the Investment Agriculture Foundation. AEL Agroecological Consulting, with Andrea Lawseth and Ione Smith, was hired to prepare the plan.

Phase 2 is the preparation of the Farm Plan completed in November 2012. It began with a survey of producers and consumers in the summer of 2011. The survey was funded in part by DenmanWORKS! prepared by Steering Committee members, and conducted by islander Taina Uitto. The survey report is available for download from this website.

For Phase 2,AEL Agroecological Consulting was again hired to prepare the Farm Plan document, although this time with two additional people on the team: Taina Uitto, who conducted the summer survey, and Derek Masselink, the consultant who prepared the Salt Spring Island Farm Plan. In November, 2011, a Farm Plan Forum and four focus groups were held on Denman Island in order to consult with the community on key issues for farming and local food production and consumption, as well as to develop priorities for enhancing farming. Over the winter of 2011/2012, the Steering Committee worked with AEL Agroecological Consulting to fine tune a draft Farm Plan that was distributed widely for community review in the summer of 2012.

This project was funded in part by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC through programs it delivers on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands.

"Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Land (BCMAL) and the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC (IAF), are pleased to participate in the production of this project. We are committed to working with our industry partners to address issues of importance to the agriculture and agri-food industry in British Columbia. Opinions expressed in this website are those of the authors and not necessarily those of IAF, BCMAL or AAFC."
