Welcome to the Gabriola Island Local Trust Area

Gabriola Island Local Trust Area is located 6 km east of Nanaimo, BC and has a 2016 census population of 4033. The area includes over 20 other islands such as Mudge, DeCourcy, Entrance and the Flat Top Islands.  The office is at 700 North Road. The lead planner for Gabriola is Sonja Zupanec.

October 16, 2018 | Gabriola Island’s 707 Community Park is Growing

The Regional District of Nanaimo and the Islands Trust have issued a joint press release announcing the amendment of the Gabriola Island OCP and LUB allowing the transfer of 136 hectares of parkland adjacent to the 707 Community Park to the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN).  With this transfer, the 707 Community Park on Gabriola Island will increase from 707 acres to 1,043 acres, providing increased ecological protection to Coats Marsh and important trail connections for the island. November 2018 | Special Meeting of the Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee

The Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee will be holding a Special Meeting at the Gabriola Arts and Heritage Centre on November 2, 2018 at 10:15am.  The purpose of this meeting will be to consider giving 3rd reading to proposed Bylaw No. 299, Mudge Island Lot Coverage Regulations.  Everyone welcome.

September 2018 | Community Information Meeting on Mudge Island

The Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee will hold a Community Information Meeting at the Driftwood Drive Public Access on Mudge Island on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM regarding Mudge Island Lot Coverage Regulations (proposed Bylaw 299).  The public is encouraged to attend.


July 2018 | Housing Needs Assessment Report

Housing needs assessments are the first step a community can take to understand the gap(s) between the housing needs of its people and the availability of suitable housing to meet that need. The Northern Region Housing Needs Assessment is available here.

June 2018 | Secondary Suites Bylaw

On June 14, 2018, the Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee adopted Bylaws 292 (OCP) and 293 (LUB) after two years community consultation on Phase 1 of the Housing Options Review Project. More information about this project is available here.

Northern Region Housing Needs Assessment and Islands Trust Housing Survey - CLOSED

In early 2018 the Islands Trust Council conducted a housing needs assessment for the Northern Region of the Islands Trust. The survey is now closed and results will be reported to Local Trust Committees in early 2018.

September 2017| Former Gabriola Trustee dies at age 90

The Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Terrence Ronald Hanna who died recently at the age of 90.  As noted in his obituary in the Gabriola Sounder, Mr. Hanna served as a Trustee from 1976-1978 and worked on the first Official Community Plan for Gabriola Island.  His contributions are gratefully remembered.
