In order to coordinate the Salt Spring Island Watershed Protection Alliance (SSIWPA), the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee has been delegated the authority of Islands Trust Act Section 8(2)b from Islands Trust Council. In 2013, Trust Council Bylaw No. 154 was adopted. Bylaw no. 154 empowers the LTC to coordinate SSIWPA as a multi-agency collaborative approach to addressing watershed management.
Since 2014, SSIWPA has been funded through a special property tax requisition in the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Area. At its regular meeting of February 18, 2020 the LTC approved a special property tax requisition for the 2020/21 fiscal year of $75,500 to fund coordination of watershed protection on Salt Spring Island.
The SSIWPA Steering Committee recently updated its Terms of Reference to reflect expanded membership and a return to a consensus-based decision making model.
