- Alternative approaches to maintaining Mayne Island character might
include:
- restricting percentage of land that can be cleared on a lot;
- creating design guidelines to reduce visual contrast of structures,
both in style and colour;
- limiting the visible dwelling façade from the water or road by
minimizing
- square footage of structure facing the waterfront, or by requiring a
- certain degree of vegetative screening for the structure.

- Recommendation 1:
- OCP guidelines should specifically consider the importance of
agricultural landscapes in preserving island character.
- Recommendation 2:
- Other policy decisions should take into account their effect on the
sustainability of Mayne Island's food system and its food security.
- Recommendation 3:
- In addition to the protection of agricultural land, the Mayne Island OCP
should consider policies affecting the viability of on-island processing
and distribution of food, as well as opportunities to grow a larger
local (Mayne Island) market. Potential synergies exist between
development alternatives and food production and distribution.
- Recommendation 4:
- The Islands Trust should consider adopting a food policy similar to that
of Vancouver:
- "To develop a just and sustainable food system for the City of
Vancouver that fosters equitable food production, distribution and
consumption; nutrition; community development and environmental
health."
