Ecosystem Mapping
Ecosystem mapping is the stratification of a landscape into map units according to a combination of ecological features. Ecosystem mapping helps us to understand a landscape better, which is essential to sound land-use planning and resource management.
The Islands Trust Area Ecosystem Maps were created using Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping, a methodology of ecosystem mapping standardized by the Resources Information Standards Committee. Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping for the Islands Trust Area was conducted in conjunction with Parks Canada, the Ministry of Environment, the Capital Regional District, and the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Reports and data for the Coastal Douglas-fir Zone and Salt Spring Island are available through the Ministry of Environment’s Ecological Reports Catalogue. Reports and data for the islands in Howe Sound will be available shortly.

Crown Land Mapping
In 2001, the Islands Trust Council initiated the Islands Trust Crown Land Study to prepare Vacant Crown Land Profiles for islands throughout the Trust Area. Phase I of the process includes preparing Vacant Crown Land Profiles for Hornby, Denman, Lasqueti, and Galiano Islands with subsequent island profiles as resources are available. The Hornby and Denman Islands Vacant Crown Land Profiles are complete and are now available on the Islands Trust website.
