Islands Forum: 2006 - Tourism (Outcomes)
Forum Outcomes
On March 30 and 31, the Islands Trust Council hosted a forum to discuss tourism, identify options for managing tourism in the Trust area and enhance community understanding about the ability of local governments to address tourism topics. One hundred and forty-one people participated in this second community forum sponsored by the Islands Trust. Participants heard from key note speaker Mayor Ken Melamed of Whistler, as well as a panel which included:
- Michael E. Kelly, a consulting tourism planner from Vancouver, BC;
- Bob Myhr, Vice-Chair of the San Juan County Council;
- Dave Petryk, President and CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island;
- Rick Rollins, a researcher, teacher and member of the Malaspina Research Institute; and,
- Michael Tilitzky, Executive Director for the Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and Councillor for the District of Tofino.
The majority of the forum focused on participants identifying issues related to island tourism, ranking the issues in terms of importance and suggesting solutions to tourism issues in the trust area.
The 2006 forum was partially funded by a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities' Community Tourism Program.
